ABOUT PRODUCTID 38728
This set of six figural knife rests, produced by WMF in Germany between 1900 and 1905, embodies the Art Nouveau spirit of the early 20th century. Each piece represents a different animal—bull, fox, squirrel, hare, wild boar, and ram—with remarkable attention to anatomical detail and species-specific features. Made of silver-plated pewter, their cool, silvery tone is enhanced by a softly aged patina, giving the surface a matte-satin finish and subtle, darker accents in the recesses. The elongated proportions and refined modeling of fur, horns, and facial expressions reflect a high level of craftsmanship. Each rest is cast as a single piece, with no visible joints, and the forms are both decorative and functional: the animals’ heads and tails are raised to provide stability when resting cutlery. The overall condition is very good, with only minor surface wear consistent with age, and no cracks or repairs. These miniature sculptures speak of an era when the dining table was a stage for daily rituals and the appreciation of detail. Their forms reflect a fin-de-siècle fascination with nature—every line of fur and curve of a horn is captured with artistic precision, characteristic of turn-of-the-century craftsmanship. The silvery patina tells a visual story of past gatherings and domestic feasts, when even the smallest table accessories conveyed a sense of cultivated taste. These knife rests can be paired with classic porcelain tableware or belle époque glassware to evoke a historic tabletop setting. They work equally well in interiors inspired by Art Deco or in more eclectic, collector’s spaces. One might combine them with linen napkins and silver or silver-plated cutlery to
