This set of four Spanish Francesca armchairs, designed by Philippe Starck for Baleri Italia in 1982, exemplifies postmodern design with a minimalist yet graphic aesthetic. The construction is entirely metal – the frames are made from black powder-coated steel tubes that flow in a continuous arc from the backrest through the armrests to the front legs, creating a geometric clarity characteristic of the era. The backrest consists of two parallel, horizontal bars, reinforcing the architectural and linear identity of the piece. Each seat is crafted from a thin, flat sheet of metal with a central drainage hole, making these armchairs suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. The proportions are balanced – a low, almost square silhouette (height 80 cm, width and depth 46 cm each), with a smooth, matte black finish that is free from visible pattern or grain. The set is preserved in very good vintage condition, showing no signs of significant wear or restoration. These chairs channel the spirit of the 1980s, when Philippe Starck was redefining the boundaries of luxury and utility through bold, industrial materials and pared-down forms. The cool, metal frame carries the echo of the Italian design renaissance, unafraid of graphic simplicity and bold contrasts.
