A set of four chairs designed by Ludvík Volák for Dřevopodnik Holešov, Czech Republic, dating from the 1970s. The construction is based on bent plywood veneered in oak, finished in a warm, honey-brown tone with a semi-matte sheen that highlights the natural wood grain. The organically shaped frames, gently splayed legs, and slender armrests reflect the mid-century modern aesthetic and a focus on user comfort. Seats and ergonomically contoured backrests are newly upholstered in a deep charcoal gray fabric with a velvety texture. The upholstery is precisely tailored with no visible seams, while the backrests are attached to the frame with visible metal fasteners, introducing a subtle industrial accent. The proportions are harmonious: height 81 cm, width 50 cm, depth 42 cm. Condition is very good—wood shows only minimal signs of use, and the upholstery is pristine following recent refurbishment.
These chairs echo the voice of Czech 1970s modernism: a reverence for craftsmanship meets a spirit of experimentation. The bent plywood flows smoothly, as if gently embracing the sitter, while the sleek graphite upholstery provides a calm backdrop to the wood’s structure. These are objects that recall a time when functionality and sculptural form were inseparable, and every detail—from the curved legs to the exposed fastenings—was a deliberate choice by the designer.
The Volák set would work beautifully in a mid-century modern inspired living room, but could
