This set of four Rung chairs, designed by Ilmari Tapiovaara for Finnish manufacturer ASKO in the 1960s, exemplifies pure Scandinavian Modernism. The construction features solid ash wood finished in a deep matte black on the legs, vertical back spindles, and top rails, contrasted by medium-brown teak veneer seats with a subtle satin sheen. The slender proportions, slightly splayed legs, and gently contoured seat provide comfort and visual lightness. Meticulous craftsmanship is evident in the precise joinery where the spindles meet both seat and back rail, while the evenly spaced vertical rods create a harmonious rhythm. Each chair is branded with the ASKO mark on the frame. Condition: restored, in very good shape, with no visible damage or signs of heavy use. These chairs carry the spirit of Finland’s golden age of design, when authenticity of material and clarity of form were paramount. Every line in this project speaks with the calm and precision of the 1960s: the ash spindles align like notes in a minimalist melody, while the teak seats recall the Scandinavian affection for warm wood.
