This set of four Tatra chairs, designed by Antonin Suman for Tatra Nabytok in Pravenec during the 1960s, represents Central European mid-century modern craftsmanship. The construction features solid wood legs stained in a deep, almost black-brown tone, gently splayed for stability and to underscore the era’s aesthetic. The sculpted, curved backrests are newly veneered in warm, honey-toned oak and finished with a satin sheen, accentuating the natural wood grain. A hallmark of Suman’s design, the open, arched cut-out in each backrest lends the chairs a sense of lightness. The seats are upholstered in smooth, light gray fabric with a matte finish, offering both comfort and a subtle contrast to the wood.
