ABOUT PRODUCTID 6691
This set of six figural knife rests, crafted by the German manufacturer WMF at the beginning of the 20th century, represents the essence of Art Nouveau tableware. Each rest is cast from white metal with a silver-plated finish, displaying a cool, silvery tone and soft matte surface with subtle natural patina. The collection features six different animals – a dog, monkey, bull, cat, pig, and a stylized big cat – all rendered in elongated, streamlined silhouettes typical of early 1900s Art Nouveau. Decoration is minimal, offset by precise attention to anatomical detail: paws, tails (some curled), and refined facial features. The surfaces are smooth, with gentle textural variations and minor abrasions reflecting age, but no damage or repairs. Solid, seamless construction attests to casting techniques; each figure is balanced and stable, designed to support cutlery. The condition is very good, with only light traces of use consistent with the era. These small forms echo the spirit of Art Nouveau Europe, where even the most utilitarian table objects aspired to artistry. The knife rests tell a story of fascination with nature and fluid line – their contours recall slowly unfurling plant forms, while the geometric stylization of animal figures reveals an ambition for harmony between utility and beauty.
