ABOUT PRODUCTID 26609
This set of six Sandow chairs, designed by Rene Herbst, is a modernist statement from the 1980s, deeply rooted in Bauhaus tradition. Each chair features a lightweight, tubular metal frame in a cool, matte silver-grey, with a geometric, open structure that emphasizes functional clarity. The seats and backrests are composed of tightly stretched black elastic cords, arranged in parallel with subtle metallic end caps, introducing a dynamic striped pattern with a semi-gloss finish. The contrast between the matte metal and the slightly lustrous cords creates visual depth, while the balanced proportions—square seat, rectangular backrest, and slender, straight legs—follow a minimalist logic. Visible joints and the linear arrangement of materials reinforce the industrial, airy quality of the design. The set remains in very good vintage condition, with no visible damage, significant wear, or signs of restoration. These chairs embody the spirit of an era when Bauhaus principles inspired Italian design in the 1980s. Their form recalls a moment when furniture sought honesty—where function and aesthetics held equal importance. The open, restrained metal structure seems to declare: “simplicity asks for no compromise,” while the taut elastic cords, precisely aligned, infuse rhythm and flexibility into everyday use. The design carries the rational voice of modernism, yet there is an undercurrent of Italian lightness—industrial coolness softened by the responsive elasticity of the cords, which play with touch and light. This set can be paired with a simple glass or metal table to highlight the clarity of the lines and industrial character. The chairs would work well in minimalist or contemporary dining spaces, as well as in loft interiors, where their open construction and rhythmic play of light can be appreciated. They can be
