The Saruyama Sofa Island, designed by Toshiyuki Kita for Moroso in 2006, is a three-piece modular seating system reflective of early 21st-century modernism. Its defining feature is the fluid, biomorphic silhouette reminiscent of rocky islands surrounded by water—each of the three components forms a gentle, low-slung body with an asymmetric outline, and when arranged together, evoke an organic composition influenced by Japanese philosophies of nature. The upholstery, rendered in cool anthracite grey fabric, is finished with a matte surface and a subtle herringbone weave; select seating zones are adorned with geometric grid-pattern quilting and evenly spaced button tufting. The construction is free from visible legs or hardware, with all joints seamlessly integrated to enhance the monolithic island-like impression. Designed for flexible communal use, the sofa offers generously sized seats and distinct divisions suitable for a variety of arrangements. The fabric shows gentle signs of vintage use, such as slight creasing and mild surface wear, but no significant damage or repairs, in line with its well-preserved condition.
