ABOUT PRODUCTID 31652
This set of two decorative glass centerpieces, designed by Josef Hospodka for the Chribska glassworks in Czechoslovakia, exemplifies 1970s Czech art glass. The set comprises two hand-formed pieces, measuring 24 and 37 cm in length, crafted from clear glass with a warm undertone and radiant streaks of cobalt blue and emerald green emanating from the center. Both centerpieces feature organic, freeform shapes reminiscent of blossoming flowers or marine life, with undulating, asymmetrical edges that give each piece a sculptural and unique presence. The bases are thick and stable, revealing the character of hand-blown glass, while the glossy finish and subtle textural variations underscore the artisanal nature typical for studio glass from this era. Both pieces are in very good vintage condition, free from chips or cracks, with no significant signs of wear. These centerpieces embody the spirit of Czech modernism—a period that celebrated the expressive potential of color and the freedom of form. The transparency of the glass allows light to pass through the bold blue and green ribbons, creating a dynamic play of color across the surface. The irregular contours seem to capture a moment of movement, as if the glass still pulses with the energy of the workshop. Each piece reads like a sketch in glass, echoing the era’s confidence in organic asymmetry and the search for beauty beyond strict geometry. These pieces can be displayed on a minimalist coffee table or a light wood console, where their transparency and colors interact beautifully with natural light. They could be paired with ceramic vases in contrasting hues or with simple, geometric forms to highlight their freeform character. The set would fit seamlessly into mid-century modern interiors as well as eclectic collectors’ spaces, serving either as decorative objects or functional vessels for fruit or botanical arrangements.
