ABOUT PRODUCTID 15748
The Pencil Shelf, designed by Pierre Sala in France during the 1980s, is a wall-mounted unit crafted from plywood and wood. Its compact vertical profile (height 79 cm, width 50 cm, depth 23 cm) is based on a solid, geometric framework. Each of the four uprights is painted in a bold color – green on the left, red on the right, with yellow and blue on the rear sides – and topped with stylized, sharpened pencil tips featuring a wood-and-graphite motif. The shelves and crossbars also follow this expressive palette: yellow rods at the top, alternating green and red shelves in the middle, and a deep blue shelf below. The surfaced finish is glossy and lacquered, smooth to the touch, with discreet joins and no visible metal fittings. The overall effect merges the silhouette of a pencil with a vibrant, contrasting color scheme, evoking postmodern playfulness reminiscent of Memphis Design and the graphic experimentations of the 1980s. The shelf is presented in very good vintage condition, showing only minimal, subtle traces of use. This shelf conveys the spirit of its decade, when color and form were gestures of audacity and wit. Its whimsical shape recalls childhood nostalgia, framing everyday life with ironic ease – as if asking with a smile whether design has a place even on a humble wall. The glossy lacquer leads the eye fluidly across colors unafraid to announce themselves, collectively forming an exuberant self-awareness set against the pop-cultural landscape of the 1980s. The shelf can serve as a focal point in collector-driven
