ABOUT PRODUCTID 26433
The DU03 sideboard from the Japanese series, designed by Cees Braakman for Pastoe in 1958, exemplifies the maturity of Dutch mid-century modernism. The body is crafted from teak in a warm, medium brown shade with a subtle reddish hue, finished in semi-matte to highlight the natural wood grain. Black, rectangular recessed handles and black metal legs introduce graphic accents, emphasizing the rhythm of the form. The proportions are elongated and low: four cabinet doors on the left, three drawers on the right, all flush with the front and complemented by visible black hinges. Precise joinery and a smooth surface attest to the high quality of craftsmanship. The finish is well-maintained, with only minor signs of age-appropriate wear – the sideboard is in very good vintage condition, with no visible damage or restoration. This piece speaks in the quiet language of the 1950s – an era where minimalist form and functional clarity merged with Japanese inspiration. Its lines are calm and measured, with no superfluous decoration, while the teak finish tells of a respect for material. The black details of the handles and legs introduce a graphic element, as if the sideboard draws from the calligraphy of the Far East. The construction echoes the spirit of post-war Europe: open to new ideas and influences, yet rooted in quality craftsmanship. The DU03 can be paired with low, geometric sofas, minimalist table lamps, or artwork inspired by Japanese woodblock
