ABOUT PRODUCTID 14998
This rattan stool, designed by Jan Kalous for ÚLUV in 1960s Czechoslovakia, embodies the minimalist clarity of East-Central European modernism imbued with Scandinavian influences. The circular seat is meticulously handwoven from rattan in warm, honey-brown tones, with gentle tonal variations reflecting the authenticity of natural fibres. Along the rim, a bolder braid creates a slightly elevated edge that visually anchors the seat, while the centre is finished with a smooth, matte-finish wooden insert for harmonious contrast. The tripod base consists of solid wooden legs, softly tapered and angled outwards, finished in a satin-matte varnish that reveals a restrained wood grain. The construction relies on traditional joinery, free of visible metal fittings, preserving the essential clarity and elegant geometry of mid-century design. Sturdy and well-proportioned (40 × 36 × 36 cm), the stool remains in good vintage condition: minor marks and gentle patina reflect careful use over time, yet there is no evidence of significant repairs or structural intervention.
There is a distinct echo of Czechoslovakian mid-century voice in this form: function and simplicity intertwine with respect for honest materials. The rattan evokes images of interiors
