The WMF sugar bowl from the early 20th century exemplifies German metalwork in the spirit of Art Nouveau. Its classic basket form features a high, arched handle and a broad, round pedestal, crafted from silver-plated white brass. The focal decorative element is an openwork frieze with grapevine motifs—leaves and clusters—characteristic of the Art Nouveau style, seamlessly integrated into the upper rim. Inside, a removable, translucent olive-green glass liner adds a striking accent, visible through vertical cut-outs in the lower metal casing, creating a dynamic interplay of color and light. The basket handle is geometric with pierced details at the joints, while the metal’s matte-satin finish and precise construction complete the cohesive, refined impression. The piece bears the WMF maker’s mark. Condition is very good—the metal displays a uniform patina, with no dents or cracks, and the glass insert is intact, free from chips or scratches.This vessel tells the story of an era when applied arts united technical precision with ornamentation.
