ABOUT PRODUCTID 11681
This Rococo-style sugar bowl, crafted in 19th-century Austria from pewter, exemplifies the ornate decorative language of late Baroque applied arts. Its surface is cloaked in a golden-bronze patina, with visible areas of darker oxidation and subtle greenish undertones, especially in the recesses, contrasted by a matte finish and gentle highlights on raised reliefs. The body is adorned with elaborate, asymmetrical Rococo motifs: swirling acanthus leaves, floral designs, and deeply embossed cartouches. The lid is crowned with an openwork finial, and the vessel stands on four S-shaped, intricately cast feet. Traditional casting techniques are evident in the visible seam lines and hand-finished surfaces, while the texture alternates between smooth areas and deeply textured reliefs. The overall condition is authentic and good – surface scratches, minor dents, and a natural patina speak to its age, with no signs of modern repairs or restoration. The form of this sugar bowl evokes the atmosphere of Viennese salons in the 19th century, where the daily tea ritual was elevated through craftsmanship and ceremony. Undulating lines and botanical ornamentation tell of a tradition that celebrates not only flavor, but also the aesthetic of the moment – candlelight reflecting on the matte metal, delicate gestures, and gatherings around the table whose echoes linger in each detail. The patina accentuates the passage of time, making the sugar bowl a silent witness to family stories and changing seasons. The sugar bowl can serve as a distinguished accent in a classically set table, especially paired with Empire or Biedermeier porcelain, but also stands out as a focal point in an eclectic collector’s display.
