ABOUT PRODUCTID 38344
This Austro-Hungarian sugar box (circa 1880–1900) is crafted from white brass, silver-plated with a gilded interior. Its surface is adorned with guilloche engraving featuring floral and geometric motifs, present on the beveled, octagonal lid and all side panels. The piece stands on four cast feet, decorated with scrolls and botanical details characteristic of late historicist and neoclassical styles of the late 19th century. The keyhole is surrounded by a finely engraved escutcheon, though the original key has not survived. The construction is precise, with sharply defined edges, seamless joints, and a smooth, subtly satin-silver finish. The overall condition is excellent—minimal patina is visible, and there are no dents, scratches, or signs of heavy use, reflecting meticulous preservation. This sugar box echoes the refined voice of its epoch, when ornamentation signaled status and daily rituals took on a ceremonial air. The guilloche patterns evoke the ambiance of Viennese salons and the fin de siècle elegance—here, craftsmanship and function blend seamlessly. Despite its modest scale, the box tells a story of a world where even sugar was served with regal attention. It would fit seamlessly into a classic dining room or grace a festive table, pairing well with subtly decorated porcelain, silver cutlery, and crystal glassware. In interiors inspired by historicism or neoclassicism, it could be combined with linen tablecloths and white metal accessories. Alternatively, it may serve as a focal point in a modern, minimalist
