ABOUT PRODUCTID 20601
These sugar tongs from late 17th-century Wrocław, crafted circa 1677, embody the classical aesthetic of Silesian silversmithing. Made from high-grade silver (12-lot standard), the tongs feature elongated, slender arms hand-engraved with intricate scrolls, floral motifs, and geometric patterns. The terminals are sculpted into detailed lion’s paws, blending decorative artistry with function. The overall finish is a cool, matte silver with a subtle, even patina that underscores their age and authenticity. The proportions are balanced and elegant, with a gentle curve and seamless construction; the tongs measure 18 cm in length and weigh 58 g. Condition is very good, with only minor surface scratches and natural tarnish visible, and no signs of repair or replacement— all elements appear original. These tongs evoke the ritual and ceremony of the historic table, when sugar was a luxury and every gesture was elevated by craftsmanship. The classical lines and delicate engraved details speak of an era when utility and artistry were inseparable. The lion’s paw ends hint at strength and dignity, while the gentle patina conjures the atmosphere of centuries past— a time when silver was not only useful but marked the importance of the occasion. The tongs may be displayed as part of a classic dining setting or within a collector’s cabinet alongside porcelain and period glassware. They can be paired with other silver utensils— such as a sugar bowl, spoons, or serving tray— to create a harmonious, historically informed arrangement. These tongs will suit interiors inspired by classicism, but they could also find a new narrative within eclectic spaces
