ABOUT PRODUCTID 10091
This table lamp, designed by Josef Hurka for Napako in 1960s Czechoslovakia, embodies a modernist approach to both form and function. The construction is entirely metal: the cylindrical shade and round, flat base are finished in a matte, light grey tone, while the upper part of the shade and the slender, gently arched stem are rendered in polished chrome. The lamp features clean, balanced lines and a strong vertical emphasis; visible screws at the shade’s mounting point highlight the design’s industrial origins. A classic, cream-colored bakelite switch sits on the cord, and the overall design is devoid of unnecessary ornamentation. The lamp is in excellent restored condition, with no dents or major scratches and only minimal signs of use on the chrome. This design gives voice to the 1960s, when Czechoslovakian designers drew on industrial inspiration to create everyday objects with a new sense of purpose. The matte grey finish evokes the calm of factory halls and modernist offices, while the chromed elements reflect light, introducing a sense of movement and visual lightness. The restrained form, free of decoration, speaks of confidence in modern technology and functionality, both hallmarks of a changing era.The lamp can be paired with low, light wood furniture or minimalist ceramics for cohesive mid-century modern settings. It also suits eclectic collector’s interiors, where it serves as a subtle counterpoint to organic shapes and bold colors. For a more pronounced modernist accent, it is worth combining it with era-appropriate accessories—such as a graphite floor lamp or a geometric wall clock.
