ABOUT PRODUCTID 14899
This table lamp, model L 197-1383, was designed by Josef Hurka for Lidokov in Czechoslovakia during the 1960s. Its construction reveals a harmonious balance of materials: the base and socket cover are crafted from steel with a matte rusty-brown finish, while the arm is a polished, bent chrome metal tubing and the shade is made of milky matte glass. The lampshade features a repeating geometric op-art pattern in red-orange tones, with the rim elegantly trimmed in a glossy rust-terracotta color that matches the base. A round yellow push-button switch is set into the base, providing a practical accent. The proportions—29 cm high, 13 cm wide, 30 cm deep—express a subtle interplay between geometry and gentle curves, resulting in a lamp that is both utilitarian and decorative. The piece is signed and has been preserved in very good condition, with only minor, age-consistent signs of gentle wear. The lamp’s form echoes the spirit of Czechoslovak modernism in the 1960s—a period when bold graphic op-art forms found their way into everyday objects. The softly diffusing glass shade seems to narrate an era where function and understated ornamentation coexisted, while the chrome arm captures reflections of its surroundings, quietly referencing an age of social change and renewed optimism. The graphic motif circles the shade like a discreet manifesto of the period’s design ambitions. The lamp could be paired with a low sideboard in dark wood or placed atop
