ABOUT PRODUCTID 21344
This Biedermeier tea strainer from Vienna, dated 1806, exemplifies the refined craftsmanship typical of early 19th-century tableware. The main bowl is crafted from silver with a warm, slightly golden hue and a high-gloss, mirror-like polish, perforated with evenly spaced small holes for effective straining. Three pronounced, pointed silver supports extend symmetrically from the rim, allowing the strainer to rest securely on a cup or teapot. The handle, turned from dark, almost black wood, features a softly bulbous Biedermeier profile with smooth, flowing lines and a glossy lacquered finish. A decorative silver collar with subtle ringed detailing marks the transition between bowl and handle. The proportions are balanced and thoughtful—at 17 cm in length and 6.6 cm in diameter, with the handle longer than the bowl’s width for optimal ergonomics. The piece is preserved in very good condition, showing only minor surface scratches and a gentle period patina on the silver.Within this compact object lies the story of Biedermeier domestic rituals. The silver’s reflective surface summons visions of afternoon tea in quiet parlours, where the precision of craftsmanship held equal value to the intimacy of the setting. The smoothly lacquered wooden handle, turned to fit the hand, seems to recall the careful gestures and measured pace of early 19th-century life. Every detail—from the symmetrical supports to the gently rounded bowl—echoes an era when utility and display were harmoniously intertwined. The strainer could be paired with porcelain tea services from the early 1800s or placed on a silver tray to accentuate the interplay of materials. It would suit a collector’s interior inspired by Biedermeier or classic eclectic
