ABOUT PRODUCTID 20392
This toothpick holder was crafted in the 1930s in Lviv, in the workshop of J. Sopyło, as indicated by the signature on the underside. The construction consists of a round, slightly domed base made of brass-plated metal, displaying a warm, silver-gold tone. The edge of the base features a subtle beaded rim. At the center stands a bear figure, cast in pewter-plated metal with a dark, matte finish and distinct fur-like texture. The bear is depicted in a natural, attentive stance, and behind it rises a geometric, rectangular toothpick holder crafted from brass-plated metal with a softly satin, slightly darkened surface. The overall design blends Art Deco influences with naturalistic realism, characteristic of the interwar period in Central Europe. The construction is solid, with visible, careful joining of the bear and holder to the base. The item is in very good condition – minor surface scratches and a noble patina consistent with its age, with no damage or repairs. This compact object encapsulates the spirit of 1930s Lviv: a fusion of practicality and ornament, where even a table accessory acquires a distinct character. The metal surface, gently muted by time, evokes memories of bygone gatherings and gestures of hospitality. The bear figure—attentive yet motionless—lends a sense of gravitas to everyday rituals, as if guarding the small pleasures of the table. The beaded edge and geometric holder reflect the restrained elegance of Art Deco, softened by the naturalistic touch of Lviv craftsmanship
