ABOUT PRODUCTID 36769
This rectangular ceramic tray from the 'Obernai' series, produced by Sarreguemines and designed by Henri Loux, exemplifies early 20th-century French decorative arts. Crafted from high-quality glazed earthenware, it features a creamy, subtly lustrous surface and a detailed underglaze transfer scene depicting Alsatian villagers in winter, set against timber-framed rural architecture. The border is adorned with flowing Art Nouveau floral garlands and delicate bows in red, pink, and green tones, creating a harmonious decorative frame. The cool blues and grays of the landscape contrast with the deep blacks of the costumes and muted browns of architectural accents. Slightly raised, integrated handles at each end complete the form, and the front bears the signature 'H. Loux', confirming authenticity. The tray is preserved in very good condition, free from visible damage or significant signs of use. This piece carries the voice of French Art Nouveau – a time when everyday rituals and festive moments intertwined in a colorful narrative of Alsatian winter. Every detail of the hand-painted scene, from the cool shadows of the landscape to the bold blacks of traditional dress, speaks of a longing for calm and a reverence for tradition. The floral garlands along the edges seem to wrap the scene like musical phrases, bringing a nostalgic yet celebratory tone into the interior. The tray can serve as a focal point on a dining table in French Country, rustic, or collector's interiors – it pairs well with linen tablecloths, classic porcelain, and bottle-green glassware. It may be combined with other Obernai ceramics for a cohesive historical composition or used as a decorative accent in a contemporary setting, where its narrative character will acquire a fresh context.
