ABOUT PRODUCTID 33363
This hand-carved tribal sculpture from the Mama (Kantana) people of Nigeria is crafted from wood in a deep, matte brown-black tone, bearing a weathered patina that reflects the passage of time. The bold, oval shape features a central cut-out and stylized geometric contours, characteristic of traditional African art. Its surface displays visible tool marks and areas where the paint has worn away, revealing the raw wood beneath. Accents of vivid green and ochre yellow highlight the base, while a vertical line of small, multicolored dots or beads in blue, white, and ochre runs down the center, adding subtle chromatic detail. The sculpture stands on a simple, angular base and presents strong, abstract proportions that speak to the tribal craftsmanship of the Kantana region. Evidence of old glue at the base indicates previous restoration. Condition: very good, with authentic signs of age and an old repair at the base. This sculpture carries the narrative of Nigerian tradition—a sense of form that embraces both rawness and expressive gesture. The wooden body, marked by the artist’s hand, evokes the world of African ritual and symbolism, where every line and color served a purpose. The matte surface, offset by colorful details and geometric abstraction, seems to whisper of its spiritual role—not merely as decoration, but as a vessel of meaning and identity. The sculpture can be displayed on a low sideboard or console, serving as a striking ethnic accent in a living room or library. It pairs well with natural materials—linen textiles, unfinished wood, simple ceramics—to highlight its authenticity and hand-crafted character. The piece will work in both
