ABOUT PRODUCTID 1883
The Calypso porcelain vase, designed in 1957 by Zbigniewa Śliwowska-Wawrzyniak for the Ćmielów Porcelain Factory, is an emblematic example of Polish 1950s modernism. Measuring 35.5 cm in height, its slender, elongated profile and asymmetrically flared neck create a striking geometric silhouette. The surface is glazed in deep, glossy black, with a central elongated white medallion framed by fine, radiating lines, lending the piece a sense of movement and visual depth. The interplay of sharp black and crisp white accentuates the vase’s minimalist but expressive character. Its finish is smooth and highly reflective. The vase is preserved in excellent, original condition, with no signs of wear or damage. Calypso tells the story of post-war Polish avant-garde – a quest to express the spirit of modernity through pure form and technical mastery. Its sculptural lines echo the experiments of 1950s designers seeking a balance between utility and art. The glossy porcelain catches the light, while the flared neck seems to invite conversation – with time, the space, and the viewer. The medallion motif speaks of precision and a desire for order, while also asserting the individuality of the object in an age of mass production. The vase would work well as a statement piece on a low wood or stone console, where light can accentuate its sheen and color contrast. It may be paired with other period objects – Ćmielów ceramic figurines or 1950s glass sculpture – to create a cohesive, collector’s display. In a modern living room, it is worth combining with abstract graphics or minimalist accessories, highlighting its geometric nature. The vase finds its place both in mid-century modern interiors and in eclectic, art-driven spaces with a muted palette.
