This tall ceramic vase, model 430, was designed by Elżbieta Piwek-Białoborska for the Włocławek Faience Factory in 1956 and stands as a mature example of 1950s Polish design. Its elongated bottle shape with gently rounded shoulders and a narrow neck is crafted from high-gloss glazed faience. The crisp white base provides a backdrop for hand-painted, abstract oval motifs in shades of green and blue—ranging from light olive to deep teal. Expressive black brushstrokes create a rhythmic, modern pattern typical of mid-century interpretations of folk art. The hand-painted decoration retains visible brushwork and subtle color variations, giving each piece a unique character. The vase measures 31 cm in height and 13 cm in diameter. Its condition is very good, with the original glaze and decoration intact and no visible signs of damage or restoration. This vase speaks with the voice of postwar Polish modernism. It tells the story of the 1950s, when tradition met a fascination with the new. Piwek-Białoborska’s designs search for identity in applied art—drawing on folk sources but translating them into the language of abstraction that was so close to the avant-garde spirit of the era. The glossy glaze diffuses light softly, while the color palette evokes the freshness of spring landscapes. Each brushstroke feels like a captured moment, a dynamic note in a ceramic score. The vase can be paired with other 1950s vessels—either decorative faience or simple glass or metal forms. It will work beautifully placed on a low sideboard of light wood
