ABOUT PRODUCTID 36729
This vase from Wałbrzych, designed by Ludmiła Pokornianka around 1960, is an example of Polish modernism in the spirit of New Look. The teardrop form, with its gently flared neck, is crafted from porcelain with a smooth, even texture. Deep black transitions into a smoky grey gradient, emphasized by a high-gloss glaze that lends the surface a mirror-like finish. The front is adorned with a hand-painted decoration inspired by horsetail grass—fine, geometric white lines and subtle red and white dots lend the piece a rhythmic and minimalist accent, characteristic of the 1960s. The base carries the underglaze green print “Wałbrzych / Made in Poland” and the artist’s own signature by Ludmiła Pokornianka in overglaze black paint. The vase stands 20 cm tall with a diameter of 9 cm. Condition is very good, with only minor, localized wear to the painted decoration consistent with age and gentle handling. This vase tells the story of Polish postwar modernism—a period when modernity revealed itself in subtle details and restrained forms. Its glossy black and dynamic grey gradient evoke the ambiance of the 1960s, when Polish design sought a dialogue between organic shapes and geometric decoration. The hand-drawn horsetail motif is a reminder that, even in an age of industrial production, the artist’s gesture captured the fleeting essence of nature in porcelain. This is an object that does not impose itself, but through minimalist decoration and balanced coloring, quietly emphasizes the presence of art in the everyday. The vase is best suited to modern or collector’s interiors, where it can be paired with other examples of 196
