ABOUT PRODUCTID 33807
The 'Okulus' vase, designed by Jan Sylwester Drost for the Ząbkowice Glassworks in the 1960s, exemplifies the bold character of Polish mid-century modern design. Made of pressed soda-lime glass, colored in mass to a deep topaz yellow, the vase features a uniform, subtly translucent body with a cylindrical form, a gently flared rim, and a stable flat base. Its surface is adorned with pronounced geometric relief—vertical, irregular striations and faceted, angular forms—that accentuate the sculptural quality and lend dynamic rhythm to the piece. The glossy finish enhances both the vibrancy of the color and the complexity of the tactile pattern. The vase is preserved in very good condition, with no chips, cracks, or visible signs of use; the original finish remains untouched by restoration. The form of 'Okulus' channels the spirit of the 1960s in Polish utilitarian design, a period when Jan Sylwester Drost explored the interplay of light, color, and glass texture. The translucent topaz, illuminated from within, seems to pulse with the energy of an era seeking dialogue between function and artistic expression. The striking relief evokes a conversation between geometric structure and organic inspiration, each edge and facet telling of the designer’s fascination with material and the technological possibilities of the time. This vase could be paired with mid-century modern furnishings or eclectic mid-century accessories. It would work well as a solo centerpiece on an oak console, surrounded by graphite or smoky glass objects, or in a minimalist setting where its color and texture provide a counterpoint to muted textiles and natural surfaces. Combined with green branches or a single, graphic floral arrangement, the vase will highlight the freshness of the interior and add a graphic note to the space.
