The 'Płomień' vase, designed by Zbigniew Horbowy for the 'Barbara' Glassworks in Polanica-Zdrój, exemplifies 1970s Polish design, where the gradal technique and masterful hand-crafting of soda-lime glass meet bold, geometric form. Standing 28.5 cm tall, the piece rests on a stable, ground base. Its color composition is a visual spectacle: a deep burgundy at the base transitions seamlessly into a vibrant orange at the wide, outward-flaring collar. The rim is finished with a distinct red line, highlighting the vessel’s sculptural silhouette. The vase shows no visible signs of damage or restoration and is preserved in very good condition.Through its sculptural form, Horbowy channels an era in which experiment and boldness defined the DNA of Polish design. This vase seems to tell the story of a time when color and light were the language of modernity and glass a field of formal exploration. The collar opens like a flower petal or the disc of a satellite, referencing space-age aesthetics and fascination with contemporary technology. The color gradient from the weighty base to the sparkling rim suggests movement, energy, and a dynamic dialogue between form and light. In contemporary interiors, Horbowy’s vase can be paired with minimalist wood or metal furniture to accentuate its graphic lines and vivid palette. It works well as a soloist on a console or sideboard, or among simple, geometric decorations—such as abstract artwork or monochrome ceramics. It may also serve as a counterpoint to neutral textiles or raw surfaces in concrete or stone, establishing a visual focal point in mid-century modern or collector’s eclectic spaces.Height: 28.5 cm.
