ABOUT PRODUCTID 33561
A small, cylindrical ceramic vase designed by Aldo Londi for Bitossi in the 1970s, exemplifying Italian mid-century modern craftsmanship. The surface is covered with the iconic Rimini Blue glaze: a deep, saturated turquoise with accents of cobalt blue, olive green, and earthy brown especially at the rims. The decoration is executed in sgraffito – hand-incised geometric patterns featuring circular medallions with starburst motifs and rhythmic rows of small dots. The color and relief composition is highlighted by a glossy, almost glass-like shine, transitioning in places to a matte, rustic texture. The vase is signed, measuring 15 cm in height and 9 cm in diameter. Condition is good – there is a visible chip at the lower edge and some light patina consistent with age and authenticity. The listed price applies to one piece.
This vase tells the story of Italian design in the 1970s, a time when craftsmanship embraced bold color and form. The glaze reflects light like the water’s surface under Mediterranean sun, while the geometric sgraffito patterns echo the rhythm of modernist architecture from the era in which Aldo Londi forged a dialogue between tradition and innovation. The tactile contrast – smooth, glassy areas meeting rough, hand-carved relief – suggests that beauty arises from the tension between discipline and spontaneity.
The vase can be displayed solo on a low, light wood sideboard or a shelf among
