The Rimini Blue vase, designed by Aldo Londi for Bitossi in the 1960s, embodies precise modernist geometry and a deliberately contrasted material treatment. Its rectangular body is structured into two visually distinct zones: the upper is rendered in matte, warm off-white ceramic, vertically grooved and delicately scored to highlight artisanal craftsmanship. The lower section and sides feature the iconic Rimini Blue glaze—an intense blue with a rugged, uneven surface marked by natural pores and dimples. The blue gradually deepens into a rich navy at the base. The interior and upper rim are finished in a lustrous azure glaze with a subtle satin sheen. This form, free of decorative hardware or handles, relies on its sharply drawn lines and balanced proportions, highlighting both the modernist lineage and Bitossi’s handmade approach.The design projects restraint in form alongside the intensity of its glaze. Distinct vertical grooves and varied textures evoke natural features—rock fissures, tree bark, or the tide-mark on a Mediterranean shore.
