ABOUT PRODUCTID 1917
This vase, designed by Jaroslav Beranek for the Skrdlovice glassworks, was crafted in Czechoslovakia around 1960 and exemplifies the artistry of mid-century modern glass. Hand-formed from multicolored glass, it features a substantial, stable form measuring 25.5 cm in height and 14 × 14 cm at the base. The upper portion displays a deep, cobalt blue hue that gradually transitions into a clear, colorless glass at the base—an ombré effect characteristic of the experimental glass techniques of the period. The surface is adorned with irregular, hand-applied clear glass protrusions, accentuating the sculptural silhouette and organic spirit of the piece. The flat, ground base speaks to the precision and meticulous finishing of its making. The vase is preserved in excellent condition, free from damage or visible signs of wear. This piece echoes the spirit of the 1960s, when Czechoslovak glassmakers boldly explored the boundaries between form and function. The blue shade recalls a cool morning along the Vltava River, while the irregular surface protrusions ripple like water—each capturing and refracting light in a distinct way, playing with transparency and depth. The robust body and gently flared rim evoke the era’s fascination with organic forms, a testament to Skrdlovice’s innovative vision under Beranek’s direction. The vase may be displayed on a low console or living room table, where natural light brings out its nuanced interplay of color and texture. Combined with minimalist ceramics or delicate glass in neutral shades, it becomes a striking visual centerpiece. It pairs well with interiors styled in the mid-century modern tradition, but also in eclectic collector’s spaces, where it can contrast against wood or matte marble surfaces.
