ABOUT PRODUCTID 27522
This pair of wall sconces from Raak Amsterdam, crafted in the 1960s and attributed to Willem van Oyen Sr., exemplifies mid-century glass artistry inspired by brutalism and the stained glass windows of Chartres Cathedral. Each lamp is handmade from thick, textured glass arranged in a rectangular, multi-layered composition with visible seams and overlaps. The colored glass combines translucent gold, amber, and ochre tones with accents of deep blue and ruby, producing a mosaic-like effect. The surface is highly varied: vertical ribbing contrasts with rough, irregular glossy planes, intensifying the play of light. The sconces are in good vintage condition; minor chips and irregularities in the glass are typical for hand-crafted pieces of this age, with no significant damage or restoration. These lamps echo the spirit of the 1960s—an era when light became a material and glass offered new artistic freedoms. Their layered, fractured structure recalls the mood of European brutalism and evokes the stained glass of Gothic cathedrals, where color and light tell their own story. When lit, the multicolored glass transforms into a near-sacral composition, projecting a mosaic of colors and shadows onto the wall—a flickering narrative reminiscent of master glassmakers of the past. The Raak sconces can be paired with teak or rose
