ABOUT PRODUCTID 15789
The Pencil Shelf by Pierre Sala, designed in 1980s France, is a vivid example of postmodernist design. Crafted from lacquered wood and plywood, it features four upright supports stylised and painted as oversized colored pencils—red, blue, yellow, and green—with detailed 'sharpened' tips and black 'lead.' The lower ends bear white bands and pink bases evoking pencil erasers. Three flat horizontal shelves (top: red, middle: green, bottom: blue) complete the composition, all with a smooth, glossy finish. No exposed joinery is visible, lending the shelf a unified, graphic presence and technical precision. Dimensions: 77 cm high, 50 cm wide, 24 cm deep. The condition is rated very good, with minor scuffs, scratches, and small paint losses (mainly on the red and blue shelves) reflecting light vintage use, consistent with its period; there are no signs of major repairs or restoration, and all elements appear original. The form tells a story of cultural boldness in the 1980s: the freedom of the Memphis Group, the delight in color, and a playful distance from traditional furniture solemnity. Each vertical 'pencil' suggests that objects need not be anonymous—on the contrary, this piece is a manifesto of daily life, mingling function with pastiche and a dash of humor.
