ABOUT PRODUCTID 23282
This late 19th-century wine jug, produced by WMF in Germany, combines clear, faceted crystal glass with ornate, galvanised brass fittings. The body of the jug is tall and slightly conical, expanding at the shoulders and tapering towards a tiered base adorned with a beaded edge. Vertical flat cuts in the crystal create a refined, prismatic effect, while the highly polished surface enhances its clarity. The brass components—base, neck, hinged lid, and handle—feature a warm, golden-bronze patina and intricate neoclassical ornamentation, most notably a gryphon motif on the elaborately decorated handle. The precise joints between glass and metal and the intact hinge mechanism reflect the high craftsmanship typical of the era. The jug is preserved in very good condition: the glass is free from damage, and the metal shows only subtle patina, attesting to the authenticity and careful preservation of all elements. The shape and details of this jug echo the spirit of the late 19th century, when table presentation was as significant as the beverage itself. The faceted crystal captures and refracts light, making every pour appear more precious, while the gryphon on the handle seems to tell a story of an era where symbolism and ornament signified status and refined taste. The transparency of the glass and the warm reflections of the metal evoke the ambience of historic salons, where such a jug might have accompanied both daily rituals and special toasts. This jug could be paired with neoclassical porcelain or white ceramics to highlight its historic character. It would work well on
