ABOUT PRODUCTID 1971
This bonbonniere, designed by Josef Hoffmann in 1922 for the renowned Czech glassworks Ludwig Moser & Sohne, embodies the mastery of interwar luxury glassmaking. Crafted from crystal glass in a deep, almost black amethyst shade, it features sharply faceted planes forming both the body and the conical lid, which is topped with a pointed finial. Both lid and upper body are adorned with a wide, etched and gilded frieze depicting birds and stylized floral motifs. The matte finish of the gilt contrasts elegantly with the mirror-like polish of the glass, highlighting the geometric silhouette characteristic of early Art Deco. The craftsmanship is evident in the seamless joints and flawlessly cut edges. The piece is preserved in excellent condition—no damage to the glass, and the gilding shows only minimal, natural patina. This bonbonniere channels the spirit of modernist Europe in the 1920s—a time when Hoffmann was shaping a new language of form, blending ornamentation with architectural rigor. The deep violet glass evokes a sense of mystery and luxury, while the gilded birds and flowers speak to a fascination with nature and refined detail. Within its sculptural structure lies the memory of grand parlors as well as the boldness of artistic experimentation that continues to inspire collectors today. The bonbonniere is best presented as a stand-alone accent on a low console or in a display cabinet illuminated with warm light, where the interplay of reflections on its facets and gilding can be fully appreciated. It may be paired with simple Art Deco-era forms or contemporary neutral-toned accessories—such as black marble or matte metal. In eclectic, collector-focused interiors, it harmonizes with other glass or metal accents, emphasizing the dialogue between heritage and the present.
