ABOUT PRODUCTID 33844
This antique bentwood chair attributed to Michael Thonet, dating from the early 20th century (circa 1900), exemplifies the tradition of classic European craftsmanship. Its construction is based on the method of bending beechwood, lending the frame fluid lines and balanced proportions. The wood is finished in a warm, medium-brown tone with a semi-matte sheen, while the wide, rounded backrest and elegantly curved armrests highlight the design’s historic roots. The seat, now upholstered in a tapestry-style fabric with floral and geometric motifs in beige, red, and green, is secured by visible metal studs, replacing the original cane. The upholstery has a slightly textured, robust weave, adding depth to the overall appearance. Dimensions are harmonious: width 67 cm, overall height 80 cm, depth 55 cm, and seat height 50 cm. The chair displays clear signs of age—scuffs, scratches, and a gentle patina on the wood and arms—while the replacement seat further documents its journey. It remains structurally sound, ideal for restoration or as a collector’s piece, retaining the authentic marks of time. This chair carries the narrative of turn-of-the-century Secessionist Europe, when bentwood design became synonymous with modernity and urban sophistication. Its flowing arms and continuous curves evoke images of Viennese cafés, quiet conversations, and the understated refinement of a bygone
