ABOUT PRODUCTID 16787
This oval Biedermeier-era lady's box was crafted around 1870 in Austria. The body is made from natural exotic shell, displaying a lustrous mother-of-pearl surface that softly transitions from pearl white through creamy beige to gentle gradient yellow. Its domed shape and petite dimensions (7.5 × 5 × 3 cm) emphasize its character as a personal accessory typical of the nineteenth century. The shell is delicately adorned with symmetrical hand-carved glyptic relief: two central cartouche ovals provide space for a personal engraving, framed by classical foliage enclosed in an oval beaded border. The whole is finished with ornate brass mounts, and the clasp features a stylized floral motif. The shell and fittings remain undamaged, and the outer finish maintains its high original gloss. The brass exhibits a subtle patina, consistent with age. The condition is very good—no cracks, chips, or repairs, only gentle traces of time visible on the brass elements.
This piece recounts the refined language of late Biedermeier—harmonious lines and exquisite materials echo an era in which everyday luxury was valued quietly and with attention to detail. The iridescent surface catches and plays with light like a porcelain bowl in a soft Art Nouveau parlor, while the precise relief seems to hint at hidden notes and sentimental tokens once carried by the ladies of that time. The gently patinated brass fittings embody the quiet passage of years, carrying a subtle air of authenticity.
Such a piece might be displayed atop an oak dressing table, beside a hand-cut silver mirror or a collection of antique
