ABOUT PRODUCTID 16815
The umbrella stand designed by Olgierd Szlekys and Władysław Wincze embodies the essence of Polish modernism from the 1940s, created for the ŁAD Artists' Cooperative. Its construction is defined by a delicate interplay of proportions: a distinct vertical panel elegantly transitions into two outward-curving, organic top elements, while slender vertical supports lend an overall lightness to the piece. A warm, honey-toned wood finish with visible grain enhances the sense of authenticity and craftsmanship characteristic of the era. Practical solutions—a rounded rectangular tray and five circular recesses for umbrella tips—illustrate the functional focus of ŁAD. Smooth edges, precise joints, and the absence of visible fittings reflect the refined restraint of mid-century detailing. The stand is preserved in very good vintage condition, bearing only minor scratches and patina consistent with age, without major damage or visible restoration. This umbrella stand narrates the story of its time: the voice of Polish functionalism that, even amid the adversities of wartime and the immediate postwar period, cherished simplicity, humility, and durability. Its minimalist form and honest materiality come together in an object that could quietly accompany everyday homecomings. The craftsmanlike discipline of the ŁAD cooperative ensures every element has its purpose—here, wood quietly evokes the warmth it brings to an entryway or living room. The stand can be used as a singular accent in a hallway inspired by Polish modernism or functionalism. When paired with a contemporaneous veneered console or a ceramic tray in muted colors, it excels in classic, light-filled interiors with clearly defined zones. In more eclectic environments, it may be combined with a geometric mirror or a minimalist coat rack—the warmth of the wood softens any industrial notes while underscoring the handcrafted origin of the piece.
