ABOUT PRODUCTID 5681
This alexandrite glass vase, designed by Aloys F. Gangkofner for Hessenglas in Germany in the 1950s, exemplifies mid-century modern craftsmanship. Made from highly transparent glass in a cool lavender hue, the vase features an asymmetrical, sculptural profile. Its form gently widens toward the top, while softly rounded, smooth edges emphasize an organic character. The thick, solid base (5 × 5 cm) provides stability and a sense of weight. The polished, glossy surface is free from decorative patterns, allowing the clarity and purity of the glass to take center stage. Variations in tone and light reflection create subtle shifts in color, depending on the surrounding environment. With dimensions of 19 × 11 cm, the vase is preserved in very good condition, bearing only a minor matte spot on one edge – a discreet sign of gentle use typical for its era. This object seems to whisper in the language of the 1950s, when a search for modernity met a fascination with light and color. The vase’s form recalls a sketch inspired by nature – as if the glass, influenced by light, grew organically into a dynamic yet tranquil silhouette. The lavender hue, shifting subtly with the angle of view, evokes the spirit of postwar German design, when experimentation with materials defined the era. Even without flowers, this piece speaks of the subtlety and boldness of form so characteristic of Gangkofner’s approach. The vase can be paired with a low wooden console or a marble surface, where its transparency and play of light are enhanced by natural materials. It works well alongside a collection of vintage glass or minimalist ceramics, highlighting its silhouette and color. In a contemporary living room
