The Plia folding chair, designed by Giancarlo Piretti for Anonima Castelli in 1967, exemplifies the innovation of Italian modernist design. Its construction combines a white-lacquered tubular steel frame with a smoky, transparent polycarbonate seat and backrest. The signature folding mechanism, based on Piretti’s distinctive “three-disc pivot”, enables smooth opening and closing. The chair’s light structure, balanced proportions, and glossy, smooth surfaces form a coherent minimalist whole. Precise detailing and clear geometry highlight the technical refinement of a design that has remained an icon of Italian functional aesthetics for over half a century.
