The Plia folding chair, designed by Giancarlo Piretti for Anonima Castelli in 1967, is an icon of Italian modernism from the late 20th century. Its construction features a painted steel frame in a cool, slightly glossy black, and a seat and backrest made of semi-transparent smoky polycarbonate with a subtle blue-grey tint. Slim tubular steel legs create a balanced silhouette, while the distinctive three-disc pivot—visible as metallic accents at the joints—remains a benchmark of innovative folding mechanisms. The square seat and gently curved backrest are ergonomically shaped for lightweight comfort. The overall aesthetic is pure functionalism, free from unnecessary ornamentation, focusing on precision of form and clarity of materials.
