The Plia folding chair, designed by Giancarlo Piretti for Anonima Castelli in 1967, is an icon of Italian modernist design. This contemporary version features a painted red steel frame with a glossy finish and a transparent yellow polycarbonate seat. Plia is defined by its balanced proportions, gently rounded corners, and visible pivots that are part of Piretti’s patented 'three-disc' folding mechanism. Smooth, shiny surfaces emphasize the chair’s visual lightness, while the overall construction reflects functionalism and precise simplicity. The chair folds into a compact form for easy storage and portability, and its transparent materials ensure it does not visually dominate the space. Plia communicates freedom and modernity—its form stems from a breakthrough era where design was shaped by both function and a bold aesthetic gesture.
