The Alky lounge chair, designed by Giancarlo Piretti for Anonima Castelli, exemplifies late 1960s Italian modernism. Its construction is defined by a wide, deep seat and backrest that flow seamlessly into integrated armrests, forming a compact, enveloping silhouette. This version is upholstered in uniform cobalt blue Trevira fabric with a matte finish, free of visible patterns or stitching, emphasizing the chair’s sculptural quality. The two substantial, low legs are integrated into the side profiles and finished with light metallic caps, serving as both a visual accent and fabric protection. The chair is supported by an aluminum frame, while comfort is achieved through direct polyurethane foam injection onto elastic bands — a pioneering solution at the time of its creation. The proportions are carefully balanced, and the precise upholstery reflects high craftsmanship. Alky’s modular concept allows for single or multiple chairs to be arranged in continuous configurations. Alky communicates a sense of freedom and openness, characteristic of Italian design at the turn of the 1960s and 70s.
